Do Head Injuries in Football cause depression?

Today as I write this article according to news clips of Jr.’s sister the family is still deciding about donating Jr. Seau’s brain for a study if he had a damaged brain due to playing football and concussions. Selfishly my wish is that if they can they should let doctors study his brain. Jr. killed himself in such a way to make that possible. Most of the “8” suicides from Jr.’s former team mates whose brains were studied did show a correlation of head injuries to depression.

My son, Cameron William Remmer, still missing since October 6th from a business trip in San Francisco suffered one severe head injury in High School football training, one where he was life flighted to Children’s Rady Hospital due to a baseball hit to his head and several other head injuries as an adult due to fights. My son’s behaviour changed from that first baseball injury. He has dealt with depression for a number of years even though to his friends he seems happy. I am not saying my son took his life because we have yet to find him. I have always felt that his behaviour changes took place after the baseball hit. I took him to Children’s Hospital at that time and they ran numerous tests only to conclude he was OK. But he never was quite the same after that and today the testing is more sophisticated.

It is a difficult decision to make and we all want the best for Jr’s family and children and especially for his parents. It won’t bring Jr. back but it just might save today’s kids that play football in Pop Warner and in High School and if lucky in College and then go pro. The problem is that is a lot of years of having a kid hit hard and lots of head blows. Improvements have been made in helmets since my boys played football but more needs to be done.

No matter their decision I support their choice and my heart and prayers are with them
