Julian Apple Days Festival 10/6-7

For our family growing up since 1900’s we had a lease on a small quaint cabin in Ramona, California. The cabin was right next to the wind mill so we had our own fresh water. The only lighting even in the 1950’s was kerosene lanterns. The bathroom was a long path to the outhouse. Our family played baseball in the large fields. The property was a 100 year lease from a well-known Ramona family-the Littlepages. They had a Clydesdale horse and a mule called Hannah.

A fly ball landed in “Hannah’s” field. My father was the unfortunate one to have to get the ball and he got a mean swift kick from Hannah.

After that we always had spare baseballs.

All my cousins and my family loved to go pick fresh berries from the Littlepages to make into pies baked in a relic iron stove stuffed with local wood. The smells from the pies and the wood were to die for.

We always looked forward to going to Julian when the Apples were in season to make fresh apple pies. Going to Julian from Ramona was like going from a small burg to a large town. Julian had a drug store with a soda fountain counter for great ice cream and ice cream sodas. The shops were fun and full of treasures as they are today.

So this weekend Saturday and Sunday October 6-7 you can go to the Menghini Winery and pick your own apples from 10am to 5pm and celebrate Julian Apple Days. There will be a lot of events like mining for gold (how the town got started was when gold was discovered), eat apple pie hot from the oven and particpate in games for the kids and wine and beer gardens for the adults.

Town Hall will feature host the Old Time Melodrama & Olio performance, wine tours and entertainment by the Julian’s Dove and Desperados for a $5. adult admission and free for kis ages 12 and under. For additional information go to
